VLD Kolivan/Lance oneshot — Poison Apple

I’ve been having ‘sleeping curse’ cravings lately. Lots of great stuff on AO3! But I wanted to see some of Kolivance lol. So here we are!

EDIT: LMAO a different title for this could have been “Space Karen”.

Yee so quick note: Kolivan and Lance are already dating, but no one else knows. Lance hides his Galra mating mark with his armor undersuit/Jacket hood.

OK LETS GO!!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It wasn’t often Voltron and the Blade of Mamora had to go on diplomatic missions together. More often than not the BOM would just let team Voltron know they’re terms and Voltron would make sure to include them when discussing aliences. However sometimes a Planet just refused to ally with the Blade unless the leader themself came along with Voltron.
Lance found himself enjoying these kind of missions the most. Lance and Kolivan(the leader of the Blade of Mamora) had bonded over many missions and meetings. Kolivan appreciated Lance for his marksmen skills, and Lance admired Kolivan’s knowledge of different planet cultures and war strategy. Throughout their time together a mutual love bloomed between them. It became a very serious relationship, and Kolivan ended up marking Lance as his own.
Despite their deep love however, it was kept a secret from Voltron. They had tried to keep it confidential from the BOM, but the other Blades ended up finding out. They were cool about it, and kept it a secret from Voltron. But they did tease Kolivan mercilessly, and suck up to Lance. It made Kolivan very jealous and flustered, and Lance loved it.
Today Voltron and a few of the BOM(including Kolivan!)were on a very important diplomatic mission. The planet Fua was a large target for the Galra because they were bursting with edible resources. In the entire history of their planet, there had only been one famine. Every inch of the planet was covered in farms and orchards. The villages were built AROUND fruit trees! They all had to be careful where they stepped, because every plant was edible. The reason the Blade of Mamora was here, was because they themselves were lacking healthy food on their bases. They needed this alience just as much as Voltron did.  Thus, Kolivan willingly came to this mission.
Lance as ecstatic, and happily walked next to Kolivan the entire time. Voltron sent worrried looks to Kolivan, their eyes saying ‘Is he annoying you?’ Or ‘We’re sorry about him’. Kolivan simply looked away, laying his eyes on his beautiful mate. Thanks to Kolivan’s mark, he would always know if Lance was ok. If he was in trouble, he would feel it. If he was happy, he’d feel it. He’d feel all of Lance. And right now, Lance was very happy.
However, Alurra was clearly irraitaed. She just couldn’t help but be worried that Lance was disturbing the BOM leader, risking the mission! And poor Kolivan, he didn’t understand the looks she was giving him. Alurra cared for Lance of course, he was her friend! But he had the habit of not knowing when to stop talking. Alurra slowed down so that she could talk to them where they walked behind everyone.
“I’m glad you two are getting along!” She (white)lied. “However, we are approaching the inner palace.”
“Oh! Do we need to be quiet?” Lance asked.
“No No, you are fine!” Laura said. “I was going to ask if Lance would consider staying out here with the citizens in the courtyard, while we go to the meeting.”
“What?” Lance looked sad.
“Princess, Lance is the Blue Paladin. He is just as important as anyone else on Team Voltron.” Kolivan gave a stern look.
“That was not my intention, I am sorry!” Alurra applogized. “I was intending for Lance to socialize and possibly win the favor of the public. It would really help the alliance.”
It was true. This alience wasn’t going to be easy. Fua needed and wanted Voltron’s protection, they were going to be targeted by the Galra the minute they were discovered. However Fua often try to ally with whom they believe the most powerful. And the Galra Empire was, well, an empire! Many of the public wether fans of Voltron or not, believed it’d be better to ally with the Empire than make it an enemy. This mission would require not only convincing the royals, but also the public. And Alurra knew Lance would be able to do that. While she did worry about Lance’s non-stop talking, she was aware of its positive uses. She did not want to exclude Lance from the meeting, and she’d make sure he was included for the final notes. But she also knew he would be really helpful out here.
“Oh, I get it!” Lance nodded. “Need me to turn on the Charm~?”
Alurra chuckled. “I suppose so. We will call you into the meeting room for the final notes though! You are a member of this team after all!”
Kolivan nodded. “That seems like a good course of action.”
Alurra clapped her hands happily, and rushed with the rest of the group into the palace.
Once they were a ways ahead, Kolivan bend down and pulled on the undersuit of Lance’s armor. He pulled the collar down and gave Lance’s mating mark and kiss. Lance blushed, but happily pulled Kolivan’s large hand up and gave his knuckles a kiss.
“See you soon, beloved.” Kolivan said as he walked away.
“Bye Babe!” Lance smiled with a big wave.
Lance simply stood on the stairs of the palace courtyard. There was a large crowd of people in the village just a bit away, and clearly a few of them were debating wether to approach him. The children of Fua however, didn’t think twice and swarmed him. Lance laughed and played with them.
“Are you really a paladin of Voltron?” Asked one child.
“What Lion do you Pilot?!” Said another.
“Your the good guys, right?”
Lance smiled and struck a heroic pose. “Yup! I fly the Blue Lion! See, my outfit is Blue!”
The kids “oooo!” and “aaah!” At him.
“And Yup! We’re the good guys! We wanna protect you from the nasty Galra Empire!”
By now, the children’s parents and a few others had crowded around. Some teenagers asked him for autographs and pictures, and other adults and parents shook his hand. But of course, there were some Fua people who asked him questions, doubtful of the alliance. He happily answered about how the Galra tended to backstab their allies, or just outright enslave others. He told them about how Voltron had many rebel armies that could protect planets under attack until Voltron could get to them for rescue. He talked about the other paladins and their skills, and how Voltron was very powerful. Eventually the crowds died down. The children had had their fun, many adult and parents were reassured; and thousands of teens now had autographs, pictures, and experiences to cherish forever. It made Lance happy.
“Excuse me? Young Paladin?” There was one person left. She was definitely an older woman, but not quiet elderly. She wore a tank-top kinda shirt and held a grocery bag of fresh Fua Fruit. Her appearance and mannerisms could only be what Lance described as an earthling ‘Karen’. Who knew they existed in space!
“Hello Miss!” Lance smiled his signature bright one. “How can I help you?”
“It took everything not to shout throughout the crowd.” She scoffed. “Filling the Fua public’s head with lies. And the children! How disgraceful!”
Lance sighed, but kept his smile. “I understand your concern, however everything I’ve said is true. Voltron is powerful and here to protect you all from the Galra Empire.”
The Fua Karen scoffed once again. “You say your here to protect us from the Galra, then why do you have Three different  Galrans here with you! I hear even one of the Paladin is a Galran!”
A Racist Space Karen too, Lance thought. I shouldn’t be surprised.
Lance took a deep breath and lightly chuckled. “I understand that confusion. We’re here to protect you from the Galra Empire. But there are lots of Galra out there who fight with us against them. Not every Galran is a part of the Galra Empire.”
“Then who are those Nasty Galrans?!”
Hey that’s my mate your Calling nasty, lady! Lance didn’t end up saying that though.
“Thats the Leader of a Galran Rebellion, and two of his members!” Lance didn't’t say the actual title of the Orginization. That was confidential until the Allience was confirmed.
“And what of the Paladins? Is it true one of you is a Galran?” She glared. “Which one?”
“Thats not my place to tell.” Lance shook his head. “But I promise, Voltron are the good guys! We’re here to help!”
The Karen scoffed. She seemed unimpressed, but seemed to accept that she wouldn’t get anything out of Lance about the Galra Paladin.
“I just don’t think we should be giving our resources to a team who associates with whom they claim are the enemy.” The Karen crossed her arms, changing the subject.
“Well Miss, who do you think Fua should ally with?” Lance asked, smirking.
The Karen made a face. She didn’t seem to have an answer. She just didnt want to ally with Voltron. She glared and grimaced, thinking. Finally she calmed down and gave Lance a very fake smile.
“I suppose you have a point, Paladin.” She said. “I acted quite hostile, didn’t I?”
Lance raised an eyebrow. He couldn’t tell if it was rhetorical or not, so he just didn’t say anything or not.
“I am sorry for my attitude, please take this.” The Karen reached into her grocery bag, and pulled out a Fua Fruit. She held it out for Lance to take.
Lance had seen a few of them in isolated orchards, and could only describe them as apples. They looked the exact same, except they were bright neon red, almost unnaturally red! But then again these weren’t apples, they were an alein fruit.
Lance took the Apple in his hand, a bit suspicious about the Karens change of tune. But perhaps the Fua people just didn’t shift emotions like earthlings did? Lance didn’t want to assume the Karen was not being genuine, see the best in the Fua. “Thank you,” he said calmly.
“Its the most red fruit on Fua!” The Karen smiled. “Most of the others fruit is either Blue or Yellow.”
“Huh, that’s interesting!” Lance nodded. “Why is this red then?”
The Karen shrugged. “I’m not sure. I didn’t pay much attention to Environmental Science in School.” She chuckled to herself.
Lance was not suspicious anymore by now. After all, the Karen had totally changed the subject to something lighthearted. She didn’t seem so hostile anymore either. He was wrong to label her a Karen, she had reasonable suspicions for being so misinformed. Hopefully Lance’s explanations helped!
“I just know that it tastes very delicious!” The Fua Women said.
“Really?”
“Yes! Its why I only bought two. They’re often just for special occasions, so it was surprising to find two!” The Karen smirked. “Go on, eat it.”
Lance looked down at the shiny red apple(-like)fruit. It was very smooth and had a really sweet smell to it. Lance had to admit after handling the crowd he had gotten hungry. And after all this talking with the Previous Karen? He was famished! Lance assumed you just had to bite into it to eat it, right? He asked and the Karen nodded. Told him too take a big bite! Lance laughed.
Lance lifted it to his lips, and sunk his teeth into the Apple. It really did taste very sweet! He chewed it slowly, savoring the taste. While it was very sweet, it kinda gave him a headache. Lance swallowed the fruit. Lance was about the thank the woman, before the began to shift.
The lingering sweet taste had turned bitter and gross. Lance tried not to, but he openly gagged at the aftertaste. Maybe it just wasn’t as good tasting to earthlings? Lance wasn’t sure when it happened, but his vision began to blur. He tried to blink it away, but every time he did so he found it harder to keep his eyes open. He felt dizzy and drowsy. He tried to stay standing, be we couldn’t held but wobble a bit.
The women in front of him smirked, and didn’t seem to care about his state. Like she knew this was going to happen. Lance realized he had been tricked. Fuck, this lady was a Karen! Murderous one at that!
“Wh-What…What did you do…” Lance slurred his words, and fell to the ground breathlessly.
______________________
Kolivan felt it. Lance was not only unhappy, he was unsafe. He had to get to him, he had to help his mate!
Kolivan stood from his seat suddenly, and the rest questioned him.
“Kolivan?” Shiro spoke up. “Whats wrong?”
“Lance is in trouble.” He said.
“What are you talking about?” Hunk asked.
“How do you know?” Pidge asked.
Kolivan didn’t respond. He turned to his fellow Blades at the table, and rushed out of the room. The other Blades nodded, and followed him.
“Wait!” Keith called out. “Whats going on?!”
“I don’t know,” Alurra said. “But if he says Lance is in trouble we need to follow him.”
The rest of them, including the Royal family of Fua rushed out of the meeting room and followed Kolivan.
Kolivan ran out of the palace and to the courtyard where they had left Lance with the public. He could see Lance collasped and a Fua Woman standing over him. His instincts were raging. He didn’t know what happened yet, he was too far away. But he knew that Fua Lady hurt Lance. He knew it! As he rushed down the steps of the palace, the lady noticed him and made a run for it. Kolivan wanted to go after her, go feral and tear her limb from limb. But his mate needed him first.
“Go! After her!” Kolivan commanded his other two Balde members.
They nodded, and ran after her, while the rest of team Voltron caught up to them.
Kolivan rushed to Lance, and knelt down next to him. He was limp, and a Fua Fruit fell just a few inches from his fingertips. It seemed Lance had taken a large bit out of it. And now he lay unconscious in Kolivan’s arms. He called for Lance to wake up, but he didn’t stir.
“Lance! Lance wake up!” He yelled.
“Oh my god!” Hunk cried out, reaching Kolivan. “What happened?!”
“Is he alive?!” Pidge asked.
Kolivan ripped off Lance’s chest plate, and laid his large fluffy ear to Lance’s chest. His heart was beating. He nodded to the others, and they sighed in relief. With Lance’s chest plate off, Kolivan ripped the collar of the undersuit off. He stroked his mark, and while Lance didn’t wake up he did lean into the touch.
The King of Fua picked up the fruit from the ground. “What on earth? Who would have given this too him?!”
“What? What is it?!” Keith demanded.
“And why on earth would he have taken such a huge bite?!” The Queen gasped.
“What is that fruit?” Shiro asked.
“Its not a fruit, its a medicine.” The King said. “We grow it in the form of fruit to make it more appealing to the public.”
“If its a medicine, why did Lance pass out?” Alurra asked. “We were under the impression that all of your fruit were edible to all races. Why did he have such a reaction?”
“We Fua have very small mouths,” The Queen pointed to her and the kings mouths. It was indeed a feature all the Fua had. “This medicine is meant to be cut into very small portions, and lasts a customer at least a month.”
“But obviously your Paladin has consumed a very large amount of this medicine.” The king said. “He’s overdosing!”
Kolivan held Lance tighter. An overdose?! Lance may be a spontaneous man, but theres no way he would do something like this to himself. That woman had something to do with it, she must have mislead him somehow! Kolivan brought Lance’s head to his chest, and cradled him. He rocked his mate back and forth, hoping it would do something.
“Oh my god!” Hunk gasped. “Healing Pod! We have to get him to a healing Pod!”
“Yes!” Alurra said. “Everyone back to the castle! Quickly!”
Kolivan lifted Lance into his arms, in a soft bridal carry. He hung completely limp.
“Oh god,” Pidge looked at Lance, and pointed to his Galra mating mark. “He’s even getting a rash! Look at his neck!” Pidge reached up to touch Lance’s neck.
Kolivan yanked Lance away, and bared his fangs at the Green Paladin. How dare she touch his mate’s mark! He growled deeply at Pidge, and she backed away surprised. He lost all reason and secrecy.
“Come on! We have to go! NOW!” Shiro yelled.
Kolivan was able to intimidate them all into not asking any questions about cradling Lance until they were able to get him into a healing pod.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Lance was stripped of his clothing and thrown into the healing pod just in time. Everyone in unison let out a sigh of relief. But not Kolivan, he was still sick with worry. His mate had overdosed, and almost didn’t make it! His mate had been hurt, and he wasn’t there to protect him. He didn’t move from right in front of the healing pod, his large hand resting on its glass.
“Kolivan, he’ll be ok.” Keith said. “We got him in the pod in time.”
Kolivan still had no sense reason or secrecy. All he could think about was his mate. Lance was poisoned. Lance was hurt. Lance was in a healing pod. Lance, Lance, Lance, Lance—
“Hey, Kolivan!” Shiro came into the room.
Kolivan turned to look at him. It seemed too have been a while, as everyone else had left and Shiro was walking back in.
“Your two Blades caught the Fua who poisoned Lance. Come on!” Shiro said. “Corran will watch Lance—”
Kolivan shook his head. “No, I will stay with Lance.”
I will stay with my mate.

The Paladins and Corran walked back into the Fua royal palace. The King and Queen sat on their thrones, looking down onto the Fua Criminal. The two Blade of Mamora members held her in place by her shoulders. Their grips were very harsh, and they looked very angry. They seemed too be holding back
“What’s the situation?” Shiro asked.
“This Fua Women,” the Queen said. “Had apparently been speaking with the Blue Paladin. She disrespectfully questioned the Blue Paladin about the alience and the Galra. Which Lance was able to handle quite well.”
The Paladins stood with pride as the Fua women grumbled and glared.
“However,” the king said. “She was able to trick Lance into eating the medicine, claiming it was a fruit. She was intent to kill them Blue Paladin.”
The paladins glared at the women, but the Blade members were much more angry. Before the king could continue or sentence the Fua woman propperly, the two Blade members totally lost it.

The two pushed the Fua women to her knees, their harsh grips even harder. She gasped in pain when the both Blades pulled her head back by her hair and began to scream in her face.
“YOU BASTARD!”
“YOU DARE HURT LANCE?!”
“KOLIVAN’S MATE IS THE BEST THING TO EVER HAPPEN TO THE BOM!”

Before it could get violent, Shiro and Alurra pulled the two out of the women’s face. The King calmed everyone down, and announced the women would be sent to life in prison. The Queen happily announced that they would be allying with Voltron, and a treaty would be drafted and sighed tomorrow.However the Paladins minds were very distracted. The Blades called Lance Kolivan’s mate? What did that mean?

“Excuse me,” Alurra spoke to the two blade after everything was sorted out. “You claimed Lance to be Kolivan mate?”
The Blades froze. “Quiznack we were supposed to keep that a secret—“
“So its true?” Corran popped up from behind Alurra. He had a wide smile. “I thought I saw a mark on my boy!”
“Wait what?” Pidge spoke up. “What is going on?”
“Kolivan has marked Lance as his mate!”
“Yes, but what does that mean?” Keith asked slowly.
“I assumed you had mates on earth? Well! When two galrans finds someone they care for very deeply and romantically, they give one another marks and become mates!”
“Oh yeah we have that on earth!” Hunk smiled. “Its called a boyfriend or girlfriend.” Hunk was silent until it kicked in. “WAIT KOLIVAN IS LANCE’S BOYFRIEND?!”
“WHAT?!” Pidge screamed. “And Lance didn’t tell me?! Oh he is definitely getting his shampooed switched out for food goo—“
“Guys, calm down.” Shiro said. He turned to the two blades. “How long have lance and Kolivan been…mates?”
“Well, Lance has been coming around the BOM base for like…six Phoebs?” The blades shrugged.
“Sis months?!” Keith yelled. “Lance has been dating the leader of the Blade for half a year?!”
Alurra, the calm and graceful Altean Princess she is, calmly said “Pidge, make sure you swap his conditioner for food goo as well.”

THE END

I know I wanted more too but this is just too good of a line to not end it here hahaha
